MAYA NGUYEN


Based in Chicago, b. 1996, VN/RUS, Interdisciplinary Performer. Nguyen incorporates disparate (and often clashing) material sources into forms that remain conceptually indeterminate, such as performance lectures, sound improvisation, and participatory sculptural interventions. Her favored materials include: speech fragments, mistranslations, painful sounds, urban recordings, sounds imitating nature sounds, breast pump parts, internet debris, and videos of daily life.

ROCKS


"ROCKS" is an experiment in playful, ephemeral, non-imposing encounters with natural environments. It documents the sound of a natural rock formation on the edge of Mietoinen Bay in Southwest Finland covered with pop rocks -- a manufactured sugar candy that creates tiny bursting fizzy sensations and comes in various colors.

The pink pop rocks visually camouflage into the naturally pink-colored rocks and create their distinctive popping sounds that make up the sound of the video (together with the crowds of geese that come to rest at the Bay on their spring migration route). In the end, pop rocks fizzle out and disappear within a day, leaving no enduring trace of the encounter beyond this video.
