Project for multi-channel sound installations and movement
improvisation. The artist creates a soundscape of her whispering voice that builds up
into textures of wind and water, in response to site-specific habitats, and as a reflection on the human experience of, and effects on, nature.

Dancers create a responsive system to the sound, moving as both individual bodies and
as a network of interconnected bodies. Their movements flow – imitating grass that
sways gently in the wind, trees being pushed around violently by a storm, or a living
sculpture that slowly breathes.

This project would not be possible without the generous help of Paige Naylor and đỗ tường linh; choreography of Jonas Sun and Minh Hải; technical expertise of phạm hải đăng, Nathan Wolek, Chris Mercer; support from various institutions; and most importantly to performers I-chien Chen, Mallory Qiu, Paige Naylor, Veronica Salinas, Linhan Zhang, Mao Chenhui, Polina Shklovskaya, Đỗ Quốc Hưng, Nguyễn Thu Trang, Lơ Mơ, Nguyễn Minh Hằng, Long Cao.

Is there paradise on earth? If so, how many? A Google Earth walk through the cities of Valparaíso, Chile and
Valparaiso, Indiana, USA, are displayed side-by-side, along with sound recordings from the two cities. The sound
and image of Valparaíso, Chile is represented by the left audio-visual channel, while the sound and image of
Valparaiso, Indiana is represented by the right. The two walks follow one set of directions: a turn left in one city,
corresponds to a turn left in the other city.

As a bustling urban city of the Global South collides with a residential suburb of the Global North, two contrasting
worlds merge into a single, dreamlike landscape. Tropical palm trees pop up next to autumn maple trees, winding
streets intersect with wide driveways, and bright city murals meet private white mansions. As the cursor navigates its
way through two Valparaiso cities, it also navigates through their geopolitical, cultural, and social landscapes. How
does one paradise compare with the other? Does one paradise change our view of the other?Image from Google Earth MapsSound from https://aporee.org/maps/

Sounds of bartering in accented German. A phone conversation in Vietnamese. Delivery trucks honking. Tram stopping. Kids Crying. Cashier machines beeping. Bluetooth Music. Silence.

ZOOM01_DXC_BER.MP3 is a site-specific sound project based on field recordings of urban ambience at the Dong Xuan Center in Lichtenberg, Berlin —the largest Vietnamese-run market in Germany that is based on Dong Xuan Center in Hanoi, Vietnam. Sound recordings pick up atmospheres of the various hangars of the markets, identify products and services offered, and trace snippets of conversations between storeowners, customers, and tourists. From these recordings, a performance (ZK/U, July 2023), intervention (Dong Xuan Center, Hanoi, Aug 2023), installation (International Currents Gallery, Chicago, Nov 2023), and video work (Berlin Art Week, Sept 2024) present the soundscape of the market as a place of both economic and social exchange within the larger narratives of migratory routes and global economies.

A crew of metal workers gathers for one night to live fabricate a large-scale steel structure that is at the same time a sonic instrument. Harsh grinding sounds of steel fence pipes being sawed are followed by resonant bell-like sounds of the same steel pipes played with hammers.
In reference to Robert Morris’ “Box with the Sound of Its Own Making.” As the story goes, John Cage came to see the box that contained a sound recording documenting its construction from start to finish, and insisted on sitting through the whole 3hr-long recording, to the surprise of Morris.

Participants: Martina Freile (Lead Fabricator); Graciela Gonzalez (Drilling Lead); Evan Geczy (Sanding Lead); Maya Nguyen (Audio Technician); Bambi Kunst (Rigger); Sayeda Misa (Off-site Fabricator); Erik Peterson (Facilitator); Jenna Lyle (Supervisor); Ruby Que (Videographer); Eric Strom (Photographer)
Realized as part of The Arts Club of Chicago Fellowship 2025-26. The structure remained on-site as a temporary outdoor sculpture throughout August 2025.

LIMBO explores such material as bone, limb, organ, abortion, personhood, mortality, and grief, through use of silhouettes, shadows, and ultrasound images.

One hand films the other hand creating shadows. The body is thus mediated by a distance between unseen source (real hand) and seen image (shadow of hand). In this distance is grief. In this distance is embodied reflection. In this distance is feminist hauntology.

Do good fences make good neighbors? Knotted Lines engages the boundary as both a site of conflict and connection through the material ambiguity of hard and soft. As wool twists into barbed wire and aluminium unfolds into cloth, what feels soft starts to look hard and what feels hard begins to look soft. In the knotted lines of wool and metal, tactile and visual perceptions of permeability and impermeability are disentangled, to be re-entangled in ways that at once hold together and apart.

Over the three-week course of the exhibition, seven ongoing interventions were developed in collaboration with Irene Hsiao and Jonas Sun, provoking the charged process of drawing boundaries with fiber, metal, and the body. In defiance of easy categorization, this ongoing maintenance work seizes on the power of being “on the fence”— not as an inability to decide or to make a choice, but as a way to inhabit difference — as a site of radical possibility.
